Mr. Powell has over 20 years of experience in providing representation to insurers and their insureds. Though Mr. Powell handles a variety of complex civil actions, his practice focuses on first party, coverage and extra-contractual claims. Prior to joining Johnson, Duffie, Stewart & Weidner, Mr. Powell was in practice for over 12 years with a regional insurance defense firm, where he represented insurers throughout Pennsylvania. Prior to that, Mr. Powell was counsel with Nationwide Insurance.

Mr. Powell often provides consultation and assistance to his clients during claim investigations and routinely drafts reservation of rights and coverage position letters. He frequently presents training and seminars in first party claim handling and bad faith litigation. Given his claims and legal experience, Mr. Powell has also assisted other counsel by serving as a bad faith expert.

Mr. Powell is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania as well as the U.S. District Courts for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, United States Tax Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. He is a member of the Dauphin County and Pennsylvania Bar Associations. He is also a member of the Pennsylvania Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (PAMIC) and the Pennsylvania Defense Institute (PDI).

Mr. Powell graduated summa cum laude from California University of Pennsylvania with a B.A. in Political Science. He was a recipient of the George S. Hart Award. He earned his law degree from the Dickinson School of Law, where he was a President of the Dickinson Federalist Society and a member of the Trial of Champions National Mock Trial Team. In addition, Mr. Powell was co-chair of the Student Bar Association Speaker Committee.

Mr. Powell served in the U.S. Army Reserve from March 1983 through March 1989.

Mr. Powell lives in Carlisle with his wife, Eileen, and their children, Matthew and Michael.
